About Us
Abbey View Community Athletics Track (AVCAT, charity number 1207500) is a charity created to ensure the long term future of athletics in St Albans. Our track is used by all sectors of the community, including athletics and running clubs, schools, and disability sports. Additionally, St Albans Track hosts a number of athletes that have reached national selection for England and of course, the ultimate accolade of a 17 year old 800m Olympian.
We took over management of the track on 1st April 2024 and in the first 4 months of operation AVCAT hosted nearly 40 school & club athletics matches and sports days, alongside PE lessons, school training sessions, Special Olympics, youth groups and performance athletes, as well as public open sessions. This amounted to over 20,000 people accessing the track.
In January 2023, under pressure from Council financial constraints, the track was threatened with closure. Subsequently, updates to rules around the safety of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC), which is present in the pavilion roof, led to its closure, leaving us with portaloos and no changing or safe space.
As the athletics community in St Albans and the surrounding district, we are desperately keen to keep the track open for the health and wellbeing of the local population. We’re working to manage the track sustainably, and an integral part of this is to provide a replacement of the condemned pavilion to provide changing facilities and community spaces to support the track users.
